The Fox Mansion
Among the many houses and other locations in the Capital Region that still stand from the time period of the underground railroad is the Fox Mansion in Sand Lake. In the 1850's it served as a place of refuge for some fugitives from slavery. One such fugitive was Charles Nalle, who was arrested and taken before the U.S. Commissioner in Troy to be taken back into slavery. Harriett Tubman happened to be visiting relatives in the Troy area. She, along with vigilant members of the Troy community, rescued Charles Nalle from re-enslavement in April, 1860. Charles Nalle is the only name that has come down to us because of the notoriety of his rescue by Harriett Tubman. It is our good fortune today, when we want to recover the story of the underground railroad in our region, that this house and its story still stand.
