The AME Church

Israel AME (African Methodist Episcopal) Church on Hamilton Street in Albany. It is known historically as having been a stop on the underground railroad, and Harriet Tubman is said to have slept inside it against one of its walls. It has long been a place where community meetings and gatherings were held. It is one of the oldest (if not the oldest) African American Churches in Albany. As the civil war started it was a place where black recruits for the union army drilled before going off to war. It has been rebuilt, or renovated several times in its history.

This sign post stands in the parking lot of Israel AME Church and celebrates its role in the underground railroad.
